Hi gents, apologies for the simpleton question....

can I have RAM sticks of different values? i.e. 2x128mb sticks and one 256 stick.

That would depend on a lot of things but usually it is ok. If you have an older computer that uses SDRAM (has 3 notches on the pin side) then size and alignment doesn't matter at all.
You may only run into problems if you have a newer computer that uses DDR ram(one notch). Then size and alignemnt can affect performance.
 
Yeah you can do that, should be any problems, would be more helpful if you listed what kind of RAM it was?

Like the other guys said, you can usually mix different amounts of memory with both SDRAM and DDR, mostly older systems though. Any new motherboard will almost require you to install the modules in pairs for best performance although you can install them in different amounts and have them still work. Posting your system specs will also aid us in offering accurate advice.
