Good cooling pad and fan monitor?

whats a good cooling pad for a laptop? my xps 1710 runs kinda hot when i play games, and i recently had it turn itself off when i tried starting up the witcher EE, i cant play that game for more than like 20 mins without it turning the system off

i got a cheap one i snagged at frys but it doesn't seem too great, 2 fans on a plastic pad with a little vent underneath it. Is that the best design or do they have better designs? Im not familiar with them

also whats a decent fan monitoring program out there? maybe something that would let me set the speed a little higher or have it kick on quicker? i got a geforce go 7950gtx, id like something that can monitor that and the body/cpu fans
