I currently have an old 19" Dell monitor from the late 90's, and I was thinking about getting a new monitor. I recently built a new gaming rig (6400, 8800gts, 2GB ram, 680i mobo) and I was wondering if I would notice any major differences by switching to an LCD or newer CRT? I have been looking at 20"-22" LCD's. Here are a link to some that I am inclined toward:

Up until this latest build I had been gaming at 1024x768 due to an older graphics card, but I feel with this new card I should be able to up the res and eye candy. Oblivion doesn't seem to be a problem at 1280X1024 (haven't tried 1600X1200...yet) If I continue to game at 1280x1024 a 19" monitor should suffice, but if I want to go higher I will need a larger LCD monitor, however I have read that some LCD's do not look good at all unless run in their native res. Is this truelly a problem that I should be concerned with in my decision process?

Thanks.

For resolutions other than native.... some will be OK, others will be horrid.... can't tell in advance which monitor at which resoluton will be unacceptable.

Personaly I would never go back to CRT monitors. (I have used many high quality models from Sony, Eizo, Viewsonic, Mitsubishi etc)
As to your other concern I believe there should be an option in the graphics driver settings to center the image eg lower the resolution from, lets say 1280x1024 to 1024x768 and display it on the center of the screen.
The image quality then is exactly the same as the one of the native resolution. I have seen it working on a SONY 19'' monitor, I can do it also on my laptop's screen.
BUT BEWARE I' m not sure if this applies to all LCDs, to wide LCDs, or if it is a monitor or graphics driver feature.
I believe there should be an article here at Toms to clarify this issue.

I haven't seen any CRTs in stores for a long time anyway.

They stopped making CRT monitors like 2 years or more ago, so I heard -- though I have seen some cheap-ol Compaq 17" curved screen CRTs for sell in stores.

nah, Viewsonic and NEC make CRT monitors. Sony no longer make their trinitron monitors but the NEC-Mitsubishi DiamondTron i hear is just as good. good luck.

Only NEC monitors I could find were these:

not Diamondtron though :(

your right, diamondton and trinitron are discontinued (i saw some for about 4K!). in fact i think all "tron" (aperture grill) have been discontinued (bad). viewsonic & NEC all use shadow mask which were never as good. wow 8O - i now have much more respect for my Dell 21" trinitron.
