so i have a broken Viewsonic pf225b.. its pretty much the top end as far as CRTS go. i can send it in for repair for 300ish dollars..

or i can save up and buy a new 20-24inch LCD

how long do u suppose a LCD will last me as far as mechanically/electrically?

i just want to hear opinions from people who have owned multiple LCD's for a long time. and if u have had problems with them breaking down or stuff like that.

For $300, absolutely not; you can get several quality used CRT monitors for that price.

As for LCDs, I don't know how long they last. I'd be interested in some info on that as well.
As a guess, it may be that LCDs could last a long time, whereas the backlight might get worse eventually; if you can find replacements for that light, it may be possible for LCDs to last a very long time. Again, I don't know if that's true.

By the time the backlight weakens, you'd probably want new technology rather than putting money into old. Lots of makers are claiming "50,000 hours" on the backlight, but nobody knows for sure. Most of us haven't had a LCD for much more than 3-4 years.
