Subject: is this good cpu for $

HERE'S SOME SPEC ON EVERYTHING i'M GOING TO GET . I'm really trying to keep my budget under $400.00. Basically what I'm doing is upgrading the computer I have with a new Mob,cpu, video card, case, and memory. heres my specs tell me what you think.

1)40 gig maxtor hard drive(already have in computer)
2)asus p4s800 sis648fx chipset socket 478( 533, 800fsb)
3)pentium 2.4 or 2.8 ghz (800fsb)
4)nVidia Geforce fx5700 128mb video card( we're not big gamers but we like to play some, {need for speed}, {tony hawk}
5)512 mb memory from corsair
6} linkwood black/silver atx midtower 400w supply

I nees some good memory because I plan on trying to overclock my cpu to learn something new I dont know if i'll leave that way. I read that it's best to have 2* 256mb ram instead of one stick for Oc. What would be the best memory to buy that'll be under $90 or $80.00. Any advise would be usefull and any ideas you have about the others items i plan on buying for my computer.

Saw this in the other section also, think those guys covered it pretty good. I also think you should consider an Athlon XP system, you could most likely get a better system for your money.

Hey but the athlon only goes up to 2.2hhz and the pentium goes all the way to what 3.4( 800fsb) vs athlon 3200 (400fsb). wouldn't the pentium be a better buy.

Man thers so much about cpu's I dont know really that good about. I really want to get a athlon 64 and i just whent to new egg and the athlon 64 have whent down in price again . What would you prefer to get a pentium 2.4(800fsb) for $157.00 or an athlon 63 3000 $174.00? What or the pros and cons in a nutshell over these two. wbat is quadpumped? AND what would be a good mobo for this under $90.00 and is good for overclocking? with a good Agp slot.

Generally speaking a 3200 Athlon, even running 2.17 ghz, is compareable to a 3.2 ghz pentium. The MHZ and GHZ, don't mean always equal more speed. This is what is known as the megahertz myth.

Right now, for a bargin type system, a AMD 2800+ is about $120 from my local PC shop. This would give you a system comparable to a 2.8 Pentium. I have a system with a 2800+ that runs 2.5 ghz with no problems (2.08 ghz stock).

3.4( 800fsb) vs athlon 3200 (400fsb). wouldn't the pentium be a better buy.
The 3.4 chip is generally at least $100 more than the Athlon 3200+.

Between a Pentium 4 2.4 and an AMD 64 3000+. I would get the 64 bit chip anyday.

AND what would be a good mobo for this under $90.00 and is good for overclocking? with a good Agp slot.
Good 64-bit motherboard for under $90?? Last time I check they started at about that price. You are going to have to decide what you want, high end stuff, or cheap stuff (Obvisuly a 3000+ 64 chip isn't high end, but the whole 64 bit platform is still a little more pricey than an XP setup).

Think of it this way, just what you budgeted for ($90 for a motherboard), you will have $300 in an AMD 64-bit system. If you went with an XP system, you would have a good CPU and a very high end motherboard for $200.

wbat is quadpumped?
Easiest way to explain it is, four 200 mhz FSBs.

Of course a lot on choosing a CPU depends on what you are using it for. Generally Athlon 64s do better than most in gaming.

It seems more like you want something cheap, and an XP setup may be a better choice, also maybe the savings in an XP CPU, could get you a better hard drive? Maybe a better video card? Maybe a DVD burner?

The Chaintech VNF3-250. But, don't be surprised when you get "quad-pumped" by a 2.8C in Doom3.
