Hello there,

Not long had a new computer (P4 3.2, 1 gig RAM etc). I specified PC 3200 / DDR 400 RAM. I just want to make sure that it is set up optimally. On the startup screen (after POST) Under memory type it reads "DDR 400 at 200Mhz...Dual Channel mode enabled" next to this it has "FSB 800MHZ".

I checked the corresponding settings in the power BIOS section of the BIOS and it read:

"CPU clock/speed = 200 Mhz/3.20 GHZ"
"Memory Frequency = Auto/DDR 400"

Is this all setup right. The system is very stable at the moment, so I did not want to change anything without knowing exactly what I was doing.

Thanks...

Just to expand on what Ned said, here is a brief explanation of clock/FSB/RAM speeds.

You FSB is the internal clock speed.

Your processor runs at FSB, quad pumped (200*4=800MHz)
Your RAM runs at Double-Data Rate (DDR) (200*2=400MHz)

Since both RAM and CPU are running at 200MHz, this is syncronous FSB.

Thanks very much for the explanation,

I could do with reading up on that a bit more, any recommended links?

Cheers.

There is likely a good article or two on Tomshardware.com. Honestly, I learned most of what I know from reading reviews and searching and reading the forums.

Hehe, no pumps. I can't believe you used "pump" on the FSB and "data rate" on the RAM. As opposed to Quad Data Rate and Double Data Rate.

Intel jargon slips through everywhere.

Nope, I heard AMD's bus refered to as "double pumped" before the P4 even hit the street. And double/quadruple "data rate" has been the standard all along.
