Halo demo now won't launch - Direct3D error

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.games (More info?)

Loaded the Halo Trial software tonight. Installed OK and then launched it
immediately and was running fine. Exited for supper, and now it gives me the
following error: "A problem occured initializing Direct3D. Harware
acceleration maybe disabled, please run DXDIAG". No problems running any of
the kids games (Zoo Tycoon 2, etc) nor ripping thru 3DMark benchmarking
tests, etc.

Sorry for the repeat problem post - I did do a search. I ran DXDIAG and
everything runs fine, h/w acceleration is ENABLED, with the only caution
message saying my directx.cpl file is an older version. I am running WinXP
Pro SP2 with ATI Radeon 9500 128M softmodded to 9800, DirectX version 9.0c.
AGP aperture set to 256M. Due to requests from similar posts, I'm attaching
