I recently purchased a 24" widescreen LCD, and have noticed the corners have a bit a a whashout. That is, it's lighter, for about and inch emminating from each corner. It's only visable when displaying a black screen.
No, that's viewing angle. Certain panel types have less viewing angle than others. In fact, if you work with colors, you should be able to notice issues even with non-black, where colors towards the corners appear a different shade or hue than in the middle.
On, the other hand, it may be possible to get a better quality monitor than what you have (better viewing angles). If you have something like a TN, MVA, or PVA, then supposedly an IPS type panel should be better.
