Help make Longhorn better!

I have been trying to convince Microsoft to change the install process so
mass storage drivers for new controllers can be loaded with something other
than ancient floppy disks when installing the OS on a new machine.

For example you get a new nforce4 mobo, and you cant install XP unless you
have a floppy drive hooked up so you can feed XP mass storage drivers.
Wouldn’t it be nice to load the drivers via CD/DVD or USB stick?

This feature is tentatively set to be implemented in Longhorn but may be
dropped. Please help me convince MS to implement this feature by replying to
this post or leaving your feedback here:

This is a Windows XP newsgroup.
Are you also posting this in the newsgroups for Longhorn? (winfx)
I would have thought the PM would have suggested the correct newsgroup
instead of this one.

The one flaw I see with trying to load from CD/DVD connected via the
motherboard controller, is the drivers you need to activate the motherboard
controller would be on the CD/DVD you are trying to read - sort of one of
those CATCH 22 situations. The same may be true with USB sticks, the
drivers may not be available yet to load, so the stick can be read. At the
point of XP installation where these drivers are needed, is a very
rudimentary portion of setup at best. I've heard USB Floppies work, but do
they use the same USB driver as USB sticks? Or are they using a generic
Floppy Drive I/O controller driver? Another option would be to build your
own installation CD, where you could supply your motherboard drivers in the
$OEM directory, and XP setup itself would load them.
For MS to use CD/DVD (or USB stick for that matter), there are just too many
manufacturer's and variations to account for them all using a generic drive
controller like they've done with Floppy. Maybe, in the near future and
maybe with Longhorn they'll have a viable solution.

I have a floppy drive, and I know how to slipstream my mass storage
drivers into my install disks, so I really don't need CD/USB to do it.

Along this same line, I wish they'd come to realize that SATA drives
are rather common these days, and trying to get them loaded when
setup for XP commences is a pain in the posterior. I have to also
try to get ACPI loaded at the same time so it's a real challenge to get
F6, and F5 during the same point in XP setup. Surely, this will
be corrected in the next OS version? ? ? ? ?

I would reply on your web site but do not like registration requirement.

I totally agree with you that we should have option to install drivers for
SCSI/Raid from alternate locations such as external drives, hard drives,
etc.
