Controlled access to XP Restore records

I usually don't worry much about drive space--it's cheap--except on
laptops. 'Tree Size' reports about 2.5GB in system restore. I'm
wondering if there is any graceful way to remove earlier entries while
leaving later ones intact (I generally use restore only for absolute
emergencies. I prefer to restore from a recent Ghost/Acronis image
file if I hit a snag).

Also, I noticed that this laptop restore folder is not directly
accessible. Not sure what sets it apart from the devel stations, but
normal Explorer denies access to system vol info folder (tho Tree Size
got to it somehow). On other systems, the _restore folder is clearly
visible.

I've just made a few changes to the system and I'm not sure if it's
reallly settled in. Otherwise i'd just disable and reenable restore
to clear all r-points. In this case, I'd like to keep recent ones,
but 2.5GB is over the top.

Any tools available?

I "believe" the only way to truncate the points, is to lower the disk
% allocation. Since they are chained, I would guess that changing
the reservation space would purge off the older check points. You
could check the Point calendar, then lower the reservation value &
then re-check the calendar.

Three ways to remove restore points:

1. Turn off system restore, then turn it back on. This will delete all
restore points.
2. Disk clean up will remove all but the most recent restore point.
3. Decrease the amount of space allocated to system restore.

To see access the system volume information folder do it through the
security tab. Right click the folder, properties, security. You'll
need to turn off simple file sharing and if it's XP Home you'll need to
do this in safe mode logging in to the built in administrator account.

Thanks for your reply, Rock. I'm a bit late getting back to this.

I did want to minimize older restore points, but didn't want to drop
all of them (just in case). Looks like there's no practical way to
thin out the herd.

I'm sure I'm overlooking something re the R-click procedure. I'm
admin on XP Pro, and I'm not seeing the security options. Size is
shown at 0 bytes, though XP is set for 1GB restore point limit.

I did realize that the laptop system uses NTFS for the system
partition, while the workstations are FAT32. That would account for
the increased security on the laptop's file system.
