Toonesia is a heavily and notably themed piece of interactive fiction.
It's set in the world of Warner Bros. cartoons, giving you, an Elmer
Fudd look alike, the task of catching that "wascally wabbit."
While looking for the hated hare, you encounter other personalities
that are starkly reminiscent of the Looney Tunes you watched as a
child. A Tasmanian devil and an especially greedy duck provide
challenges along the way. The puzzles aren't very complex, but they
require the player to think like a cartoon character. One must
constantly remind oneself that the rules of real life don't apply and
there are cartoony ways to solve problems.
All isn't perfect in Toonesia, however. On one of the cliffs in the
desert area, the author mixed up east and west, which causes much
confusion. I ended up dying a few times before i managed to guess my
way out, only to realize the mistake later. Also, there didn't seem
to be much work put into making the game easier to control. I often
had to break the flow of the game to run through a list of synonyms
before getting the game to accept my command. Lastly, I got very near
the end, but couldn't get the completion. After turning to a
walkthrough out of sheer frustration, I found I was giving the proper
commands, but for some reason, the intended effect was not happening.
It seems as though Toonesia isn't really finished. All the parts are
there, but it needs to be cleaned up.
Despite the flaws, which are really minor quibbles, Toonesia is a
very fun and engaging title. Getting the chance to enter the cartoons
of one's youth is reason enough to play this game.
