Without a doubt go for M17,because HD 3870(even in single mode)is alot better than a 8700MGT.
About RAM you wont see a noticeable difference between 3GB and 4GB,also even if u go with M15x,the whole 4GB RAM wont be recognized due to 32bit OS.

If I buy m17 alienware w/ single ATI, can I later upgrage it w/ dual ATI?

Without doubts. Alienware m17 is a gaming beast. According to me it is the best gaming laptop present in the market.

Heh, you obviously haven't seen some of the competition.

@Dark: It may be possible, but it would have to be done through Alienware and may cost more than just getting the second 3870 now.
