A friend gave me his old laptop when he relocated to Phoenix. The laptop is HP Pavilion with HSTNN-C17C labelled inside the battery compartment. When I play a music CD or DVD, I don't hear any sound. Likewise, when I play a DVD, I see the pictures, but hear no sound. If I play an audio file, I can hear the sound if I use a USB headphone from Plantronics. There is no sound either when I plug in a pair of speakers into the audio jacks. I frequency see this message "High Definition Audio Device Failed" or "ALTEC LANSING - This device cannot start (Code 10). I have scanned the web for solutions, but all the posts are very confusing. Any idea what is going on and how to fix?

P.S. The machine initally was loaded with Windows XP, was upgraded to Windows Vista. When it was passed on to me recently, I upgrade to Windows 7.

I checked it out; here is the results. I guess I am out of luck. Thanks.
