Pre-Competition Predictions

A group search on Google brings up competition predictions from prior years
(from LucFrench, and others add to it). I couldn't find the predictions
discussion for this year. Does anybody have a link to it, or was this
tradition abandoned?

Thanks.

I enjoyed bandwagonning Luc's annual "Flaming Head" predictions, but I
didn't notice one this year. It just wouldn't be the same starting one
without
him.

fifth."

If there was one, I could make some guesses about what was on it. There
were some very bizarre commonalities between a bunch of games this time
around. Other than that, however, I shall say no more until Nov. 16th.

Are we allowed to say which game we think has the best chance of
winning or is that considered to be breaking the rules as far as
discussing the games before the deadline is concerned.

I should have thought that it certainly would; identifying an
individual game as having the best chance of winning must surely
count as discussing it and thus as a violation either of Judges'
Rule 2 or of Authors' Rule 5. The latter is particularly explicit:

"5 . Authors of a competition entry may not discuss any of the
entries in a public Internet forum during the voting period, nor may
they canvass fora for votes. Once the competition has begun, do not
post your thoughts on your entry or anyone else's on a newsgroup or
bulletin board until the deadline for voting has passed."

Of course, I'm in no position to give an official ruling on this,
but ISTM that the rules don't allow much room for doubt on this
issue.

My predictions :

- One of the games will win.

- The winner will probably be a man, or possibly a woman.

- Obviously living in America, or some other country. It's most likely
he/she will have internet access too.

- One of the games might even come last.

- Most of them will come somewhere between the two.

I would have to agree with Eric. Although I'd love to spill my thoughts on
each entry so far (I've played 27 now, which includes the two that are no
longer participating -- only 10 more to go), I can't. However, I have sent
private email (not a public discussion) to a few of the other authors,
giving my thoughts on some of the games.

As for predictions, it's too late now. From what I read in searching for the
predictions in past competitions, it's not really a "prediction" if you've
already seen the games. Besides, public predictions at this point would be
against the rules.

I'd love to chat privately about any of the games, though. As long as we're
not influencing votes, discussing our opinions in public, etc., this doesn't
appear to be against the rules. As authors, remember that we also get the
"miss congeniality" vote. I wouldn't want to participate in any private
discussion where I was being urged to reshape my opinions in that regard,
nor would I want my own comments to cause a situation where other authors'
opinions of my entry were affected (either by discussing my entry, or by
potential criticism of other entries). Beyond that, you're welcome to email
me your private thoughts on the competition. I've been hoping for early
feedback -- been giving it, where possible.

Sorry if this is a double-post. The original seems to have been lost in
transit (at least, it never seemed to appear in the discussion).

Here is attempt number three. After two hours, my message still never
appeared. If it's just a problem on my end, all three may show up and I'm
just not seeing news updates. If so, I appologize. As far as I can tell, the
message just isn't being posted.

I won't try a fourth time -- if this one doesn't show up, then it just
wasn't meant to be. :)

Since you are an author, no. No discussion of any of the entries in a
public forum.

I've seen all three here at my end.

If you're posting via google groups or some other web-based access, the postings seem to take much longer to appear than they do through dedicated news servers.

Nope, posting through my ISP's news service (using Outlook Express). What's
strange is, it has never done that to me before. It was taking four to six
hours for new posts to appear today -- not just mine, but any (I noticed
that every new message had timestamps several hours in the past). Something
with Cox, I suspect.

Thanks,

Yes, I'd say those are fairly safe predictions... Prediction number
two may be a bit iffy depending on the ages of the authors, but it's
probably safe... I think I'm prepared to second those predictions :)
