When I open an image with the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, the window
comes up with nothing but grey and the words "Generating Preview". It causes
the whole system to become unstable and after about 1-2 minutes it finally
loads the image and everything is responsive again. This is happening on a
newly-reinstalled machine with XP SP2 (slipstreamed) and all latest security
updates, Symantec Antivirus 9, MS Antispyware, etc. It's only happening when
I try to open images that are on my desktop. Files elsewhere seem to open
without any problems.

Anyone else run into this?

Thanks!

How is your Explorer/View option set for "Do not Cache Thumbnails" ?

It was unchecked. I checked it and tried again -- no difference.

Same here, I still have the same issue whether the "Do not cache thumbnails"
is checked or unchecked. It's something about the desktop that it takes
forever for images to load (actually causes the system to become totally
unstable and locks it up). I've noticed that it is only on certain machines
(both which are newly-installed XPSP2 machines with latest updates, and
spyware free). Duh!

It's been my experience the F&P viewer is rather slow compared to some
other image viewers (Irfanview)
