I'm considering upgrading to a P4 2.5gHz system. I've looked around and I've noticed that some mobo's out there have 800/533/400 FSB (example the ASUS P4S800). And they support memory bus speeds of 400/333/266/200. My question is: If I keep my DDR266 memory (1GB worth) and buy a P4 2.53Ghz 400Mhz FSB, will the cpu still run at 2.53Ghz with DDR266 memory installed? Or will the system run the cpu at a lower clock speed because of the slower ram?
First off, pretty sure a 2.53GHz cpu would have to have a 533 MHZ bus, as the actual bus speed would be 133, quad pumped(data is sent 4 times per clock cycle) to 533 "mhz".
And no, DDR 266(preferably dual channel), would be the appropriate speed ram for htis processor.
Your problem would lie in fact that I think that motherboard is single channel only, i848 chipset, and then you'd be choking the bandwidth of the processor. The ideal setup for a P4 is a dual channel motherboard with the ram running at half of the "bus" speed of the processor. So for a 533 mhz bus P4, you'd want dual channel DDR 266. For an 800 MHZ processor, you want dual channel DDR 400.

I was meaning a P4 2.5gHz 400Mhz FSB processor. But they do make the 2.53gHz 533Mhz version also.
So in summary my DDR266 wont go to waste That Asus mobo I refered actually has a Sis648Fx chipset. I just have to verify if that is a dual channel motherboard now.

Darn, remembered wrong. Yeah, That's one thing that has bothered me with asus lately. Have P4P800, runs great, but I hate how that whole line is called the P4x800, even though that naming scheme includes at least 5(I think actually 7 or maybe even more) chipsets from 3 different companies, with noticably different feature sets.
Nope, 645/648 is single channel, 655 series is dual channel.
