Windows 7 desktop changes when removed from docking station

When I remove my laptop from the docking station, the wallpaper shrinks and the shortcut icons are rearranged. annoying and time consuming.

NO. The position of the icons changes. for example all my shortcuts to applications are on one side of the screen when docked. Undocked they are randomly dispersed with the other icons.

When in the docking station, it has an external monitor.

It sounds like the laptops native resolution doesn't match the monitor's native resolution. Icons get moved around when the resolution changes. Going from a larger resolution to a lower one seems to amplify the problem. Just right-click the desktop and select "arrange icons by" to restore them.
