Flatscreen problem

Hi guys. I just signed up to ask a question about a flatscreen.

My dad's flatscreen monitor will go black 2-3 seconds after turning it on. If you turn it off and back on, it will come back for 2-3 seconds and go black again. Eventually he says it stays on...after 30-40 tries turning it on and off. He bought a new one and I told him I'd take this one in case it could be salvaged.

My question: Can it be salvaged? I know the knee jerk answer is to say 'toss it and get a new one', but I just want to see if this one will work. If not, no big loss since it was going in the garbage anyways, but I want to know if there's anything I could do.

It's a couple years old so I doubt the warranty is good anymore, but I might just call Dell and see what I can find out from them.

Any suggestions?
