If I have four memory slots on my motherboard that supporst dual channel, and currently two of them are taken up by 2 512 dimms running dual channel.

If I obtain 2 more dimms of the exact same make/model that I currently have, do all four work dual channel or would it be better to preplace the 512s with 2 1gig sticks if I wanted to upgrade to 2 gigs of ram?

Yes, it would work in dual-channel mode. If it's a motherboard with the nforce2 chipset (supports 6-ranks max) and has 4 dimm slots and the 512MB dimms are two-rank (doubled-sided), could only install three of the 512MB dimms.
