I have a laptop with a mini firewire and would like to transfer some video into the the firewire from a dvd player. The DVD player only has RCA plugs and HDMI. Are there cables or interface devices that allow me to do this? Anyone have a better suggestion?

I don't think you can do that. You're going to need a tuner card with composite inputs...hard to find for a notebook.
