What is this?
=============
In short
--------
It's a GUI interpreter for Tads games. It runs on Unix systems,
including Mac OS X.
In long
-------
QTads is a non-multimedia interpreter for text adventures developed
with Tads; Tads2 and most of Tads3 (I say "most" because, right now, it
lacks Tads3 banners). KDE is not needed; a 3.1.x or higher version of
the Qt library is enough. It runs in every Unix system for which the Qt
library is available. It is known to work on Linux, Mac OS X and
BSD-systems. It should also run on systems like Solaris, Unixware, GNU
Hurd, Irix, and probably many more, but no one tried it yet; feedback is
welcome.
Windows is not supported (due to lack of a commercial Qt license). If
you own the Windows version of Qt and want to help, feel free to
contact me.
What's new
==========
Here's an abbreviated list of the most important changes since the 1.5
release.
- Text-color support for Tads 3 games.
- Transcript files will now be saved in the system's local character
set, not UTF-8 (except on systems that use UTF-8 as the native
encoding, like Mac OS X and modern Linux systems).
- Tads 2 transcripts don't contain spurious 01-bytes anymore.
- The TadsVM file I/O safety levels are now supported and can be
adjusted in the configuration dialog.
- Updated the Tads virtual machine to version 2.5.9/3.0.8.
- Various bug-fixes and enhancements.
where you can find ready-to-run binaries for Mac OS X and Linux, as
well as the sources. Screenshots are also provided.
If you're not a Mac OS X user, you should prefer the source distribution
and build it manually; due to a bug in Qt the provided executables might
have broken word-wrapping when run with a version of Qt different than
the one the executable has been compiled with. Sorry; blame Trolltech.
Note: At the time of this writing, the OS X binary is out of date; there
is no binary of the 1.6 version available yet. If anyone wants to
supply me with one, please contact me. The only way right now to use
the new version in OS X is to download the source code and compile it on
your own.
