Thanks "R.McCarthy" for the suggestion below.
I checked my CPU Usage and discovered that it was always at 100% all the
time!! I'm sure that cannot be right. So I checked the Processes tab and
discovered that the culprit seemed to be "SPOOLSV.EXE" . When I stopped that
task the CPU Usage dropped to about 4%!!!! And more importantly, every
application seemed to work much faster with little or no delays, which was
my problem in the first place. YIPEE!!
However the problem returned the minute I opened MS Word and SPOOLSC.EXE
reappeared in the Taskmanager.
Any suggestions anyone.

You should use Taskmgr, Processes (TAB) and add a few columns
to watch your system. From your description, it sounds like Priority
or CPU Usage that is causing the lag. This assumes that you've done
normal operations to eliminate Malware/Viruses/Trojans.
Along with normal data fields - I would add/monitor the following:
Mem Usage
Peak Mem Usage
CPU Time
Handles
Base Priority
and possibly I/O Writes to monitor disk activity.
Once TaskMgr is open & set to Processes (Tab), Click View,
Select Columns. After you get the fields set, you might slide their
headings next to each other to make viewing/monitoring easier.
