I have WinXP Pro SP2 with all updates. I also have Roxio CD Creator 5
and am aware of KB 315350. My installation of CD Creator 5 has been
updated with the Roxio WinXP patch and works just fine with XP. I also
have iTunes -- and that's the cause of the problem.
I recently installed the latest version of iTunes, v. 4.9. Although it
appeared to install properly, when I started iTunes after the upgrade, I
got a message from the "iTunes Setup Assistant" that "The registry
settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and
DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD
burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." So I did.
At this point, only iTunes could read CDs in either of my CD drives. If
I attempted to access a data CD, e.g., from Widows Explorer, I got the
"Drive:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." error discussed in KB
315350.
I managed to restore my CD drive functionality by doing a system restore
(lucky me -- some people who have installed iTunes 4.9 have had system
restore become inoperative). This broke iTunes, so I reinstalled (only
could find the 4.9 installer). I got the same "iTunes Setup Assistant"
warning. Contrary to the warning, iTunes seems to be able to import
from CDs with no problem; I haven't tried burning. I'd like to make the
warning go away, but the only way I know of to do that is to
re-reinstall iTunes 4.9 -- and then I'll probably be back with the
"Incorrect function" problem, which is far worse than a nag message each
time I start iTunes.
It's been suggested the "incorrect function" error can be fixed by
uninstalling Roxio CD Creator, reinstalling it, and re-applying the
WinXP fix (or, I suppose, buying and installing a more recent version of
CD Creator). I can download the Roxio update, but since CD Creator came
pre-installed, I'll have to hope that the app itself is included on the
"applications" CD that came with my system. And anyway, I don't know if
doing this will give iTunes a problem.
Before I try that, can anyone suggest where in the registry I can find
(a) the settings used by the iTunes drivers or (b) the settings used by
Roxio (and Windows Explorer) for recognizing a CD drive. It seems to me
at least possible that if I knew these keys and values I could add them
manually. That is, either add the iTunes keys now to my working system,
or re-install iTunes (which will automatically install the iTunes
registry stuff but cause everything else to fail) and then manually add
back the other keys/values without having to do a system restore (which
will delete the iTunes stuff).
