Here's what I did... copied the entire contents of my hard drive (including all hidden files) to an external hard drive. This is for backup... is this an effective way to backup a win install hard drive? Is there any benefit to using western digital data lifegaurd tools and copying the partition to the external hard drive?

Nope, that copy will never work.

You'll have to ask MS why it doesn't work, well, there are a few guys in here that can explain it.

Best program I can think of to copy a drive and have it working is Powerquest Drive Image, but instead of copying the drive (possible with DriveImage), I'd probably just make an image of the drive and use that later, when needed, to restore your original drive.
