Is it possible to remove the "Documents" link from the start menu. I'm
sure that Bill Gates thinks it's a good idea, but I really cannot
think of a good reason for it being there.

You can modify your Start Menu the way you like. Right-click on the
Start button and then left-click on Properties. Then click the
Customize button and check/uncheck options as you wish.

That was the first thing I checked. Removing Recent Documents is not in the
list when using Classic Start Menu.

Which style start menu are you using? It is removable using Taskbar/Start
Menu properties if using the XP style start menu.

Thanks for the swift reply and sorry about that, I'm using XP Home and
classic start menu. I found this on the Web:

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called
'NoSMMyDocs' set the value to equal '1' to enable the restriction.

And having created the DWORD cannot get the Value to 1. All I get is
"Invalid value" or words to that effect

See "recent documents" here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm

Especially the link to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Take a look at line 50 on that page
Have not personally tried that edit but it is a REG file that can be opened
in Notepad. Once open in Notepad, you'll see exactly what changes are
needed. Double click the REG file to merge the values into your registry.

You hadn't said that it was for the classic menu though.

For the Classic Start Menu, set NoRecentDocsMenu to 1 in this key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

NoRecentDocsMenu value may not exist by default. If so, create a new value
of type REG_DWORD and set it's data to 1
