File Size Limitation

I need to transfer very large files (up to 200gb) from Mac to PC. I tried using an external HD but the only file system which both can see (I think) is FAT32, which has a fie size limitation of 4gb. Is there any way around this? Thanks!

There's no way to compress it that much. This is Hi-Definition video files, so unfortunately I'd be lucky to get 5% compression.

When you zip something you can archive it in multiple pieces. Thus you're splitting the compressed file, not the hi def vid.

I'm pretty darn sure you'll be able to do it.

You may be better off trying to send it across a network connection if you can. Another option would be to burn it to a CD or DVD.

That would have to be one darn big DVD!

Interesting idea on the zip fiole splitting. I'll have to look into that one. Any leads appreciated!

Got anyway to do RAR files on a MAC?

Sorry, long day at work. The file size didn't register correctly. Those are some giant files. Definately need to .rar them into smaller files. Rar would definately be better than zip, as it seems to handles AV files much better, though I don't know if it's been incorporated into a Mac program. The ones I've seen mostly support zip, tar, gzip, and stuffit. Also found some links for you.

Great links, thanks. Problem is that the programs don't work on PC, so once I get it there it's still in a jillion pieces. Trying to find a PC program that will understand one of the Mac ones...

That may be the hard part. I'm not sure if there's anything PC based that'll decipher the Mac pieses correctly. You'll probably have to try a bunch of them to find one that works. Otherwise you'll have to just network the two together (which will probably be just as hard) and transfer the files for the next week or two, praying the transfer doesn't stop in the middle.

Hmmm, can Mac OS read the XFS filesystem? There's a guy in the gentoo forums who wrote an XFS filesystem driver for windows. I've used it.

So if the mac can read/write xfs, then just format the drive xfs, write the files and I'll see if I can find you the xfs windows driver.

If you need something to allow Windows PCs to read Mac files, I recommend MacDrive 5 or 6. I had to use this to get my graphic art work to and from my University's Mac lab. I was able to save stuff on a Zip100 and then transfer them back to my PCs HHD and then desipher the info with MacDrive 5.

Now, in response to splitting the Zip file. I don't know if this is already known to you. But it's quite easy to split a zip file. First create the zip file (w/ Winzip 9), then from the action menu, find Split. From there you can choose how large each split file will be. Though be careful, you better have a HUGE HUGE hard drive, cause once you create a 150-200GB Zip file and then split it you'll have the original zip file and the 150-200GBs of split files on one PC. That's about 300-400GBs of space needed.

If I were you I'd see if Mac supports WinRAR like the rest have been saying. I believe with WinRAR you can create a split archive right off the bat.
