Why image flickers in Win2000?

I recenltly installed Win2000 on a system on which I was using win98 & winXP. Every thing works very fine except the display image which seem to flicker a little bit. It is not as much stable as it was in win98 and winXP.
If I increase the Refresh Frequency from Moniter Settings from 60Hertz to 72Hertz, then every thing works fine. Image is very much stable as it used to be in Win98.
Why the image seems to flicker (a little bit) in Win2000 as it was fine with Win98?
Is increasing the Refresh Frequency upto 72 MHz is right???
Mark Minasi writes in his book <b>Mastering Windows 2000 Professional</b>;

<i>"Specifying a refresh rating that is too high for your monitor can permanently damage your monitor."</i>

Is a frequency of 72 Hertz so highy for my monitor that it can permanently damage my monitor?
Any other safe fix to the flickering image problem?

look in the manual for your monitor. It will tell you what refresh rates it can handle at each resolution. (aka RTFM)

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

Unfortunately, I have lost the monitor's manual. My monitor is Philips "104E".
In windows 98, my display adapter's refresh frequency is set to "Optimal". When I reset it to 60 Hertz,(that is in Win2000) I get the same flickering image. But in Windows 2000, no "OPTIMAL" option is available, Why???

I am using TX PRO's built-in video card drivers i.e. SIS 5597/5598. Is there some sort of compatibility issue of the video card with win 2000??? Do the drives need to be updated???
Help please!!!

This problem can be fixed if I change the setting to 800x600 at 72 Hertz. But I think that this frequency is too high.
Anyother idea?

A 800x600x32@72Hz refresh rate is not too high for that monitor.

Thanks guys!

What refresh frequency do you think my monitor uses in Win98, as it is set to 'OPTIMAL'. But there is no optimal option available in Win2000.
Can any one provide the drivers for SIS 5597/5598 for Win2000. I have searched for them but could not find.

Thanks in anticipation!

The "Optimal" refresh rate in Win98 is usually 60Hz, which is anything besides optimal, in reality. I'd set the monitor for either 72, 75, or 85Hz at 800x600, regardless of the operating system. Your eyes will thank you!

I hope a new monitor is coming with that new computer, xyz!

Best I could do on the drivers:

<A HREF="http://home.directlink.net/~timmy/M571/M571.htm" target="_new">SIS 5597/5598 drivers</A> for Win2K.

Make sure this is the right driver set for your system before installing these.

Hey, I can help with this one, I think. I got this on my cheezy Packard Bell. I guess I'm not the only one that has to live with this trash.

Thanks <b>Toejam</b> and thanks <b>Bryan</b> !
The "Optimal" refresh rate in Win98 is usually 60Hz, which is anything besides optimal, in reality.
I re-set the frequency from optimal to 60 Hertz (in win98), and got the same flickering image as was in win2000. It means that refresh rate which win98 is using is more than 60Hertz. I set it to 72 and got the same stable result as was at "OPTIMAL" So does it mean that refresh rate in win98
is also 72 Hertz or even more???

The drivers which I was initially using in Win2000 were not digitally signed for win2000. But I got correct drivers from the Win2000 CD and they are digitally signed. I have set the refresh frequency to 72 Hertz and every thing seems very much fine.
There is another option for changing VGA Frequency in BIOS.
What's that?

I hope a new monitor is coming with that new computer, xyz!
 Yes, definitely new monitor is coming with that new system which I believe would be capable of exhibiting "real great performance".

And one thing about monitors...Here in Pakistan, the top selling monitors are;
<b>LG</b>
<b>Philips</b>
<b>Compaq</b>
Which one would you recommend?

<font color=blue>There is a very crucial issue about sutting down win98 at Win98 forum. That needs the immediate attention of you people.</font color=blue>
