CPRM and my dvd burner

i ran dvd info pro freeware and come to find out my sony (DRU500A) dvd+-RW drive has CPRM authenticate. I looked it up as i've read about it before and remembering how bad it was and sure enough its that anti-piracy thing. It was threatened that it was going to go into hard drives and the like to prevent people from making copies of mp3's and other files.

i have the sony dru-500A. I really don't like CPRM and if i would have known this drive had it i wouldn't have bought it. I paid good money for it too now i'm kind of pissed. I had problems making copies of programs before and with this drive i cannot make multisession disks.

what could you suggest i do? i'm looking at the pioneer 108XL for 145 about. Just looking for ideas of what you fellow tech savvy nerds would do.

More about cprm burner
  1. Companies I would most likely suspect of adding anti pirating to their hardware, in order of likelyness:

    Sony
    Pioneer
    Panasonic

Companies that are less likely to bother with it:
    NEC
    TEAC

I'd probably go with a Chinese drive if I really wanted to make sure no anti-pirating measures were taken.

  2. ya the new NEC looks nice ... but i read one review where they had quite a bit of problems with it. I'll have to find other reviews.

  4. i looked at them and wasn't impressed with what they had. NEC was better and NEC is slightly better then the pioneer.

  5. LiteOn has recently released SOHW-1653S (16x DVD+R, 12x DVD-R, 4x DVD+R DL). It should put them back on top again. SOWH-1633S was a dissapointment, with only 2.4x DVD+R DL speed.

  6. interesting ... but ya don't know much about lite on.

well NEC looks good... but the new plextor coming out next month for pre-orders has the samething as the NEC but 8x dvd+rw and that "bit" thing as well as 8MB cache.

  7. Plextor burners are highly overpriced. 8 MB buffer practically doesn't matter, and within few months NEC, LiteOn and others should have 8x DVD+RW capable burner.

  8. i agree plextors are insanely over priced.

not sure if i should upgrade my sony dru500AX now or wait 4 months. If i get one now i'd probably get NEC3500A. I'll have to look into the lite on that you said just came out.
