Theft is a crime of opportunity. The easiest way to counteract it is to not let your notebook out of your sight.

I suppose that works against a street mugger who is twice your size, holds a gun, punched you three times in the face, and took your suitcase/bag?

That's called Assault and Battery. Honestly, though...if someone steals your notebook, having it tracked won't really help. The software will be gone soon enough. The real best defense is a good offense. Don't leave it alone, and don't walk alone in the street. Stay alert and assertive, and watch your back. And don't make it obvious you've got a notebook. I don't know what Canada's laws are on carrying a weapon, open or concealed, so I can't comment on them - but in the US, you are allowed to open carry a handgun (with some restrictions). If you're really worried, look it up and consider arming yourself and getting trained to use it. Sure, you can have software to track your notebook...but what are you going to do with it? Track the person down and ask for it back? The police will likely be too slow to respond, and by that time, your data may already be compromised.
