Hi i'm kinda confused as to what is going on, the computer detects a my dvd drive but when i put in the cd it doesnt detect it, i think it has to do something with the lens, is there someway i can fix this myself or would i have to get a new one?

Does it detect DVDs? Is this only in Windows? What happens if you stick a bootable CD in the drive, and try to boot from it? You could try switching the IDE cables, as bad cables can do really weird things.

If it is something with the lense, most likely you aren't going to be able to do anything to fix it.

Well i don't think it's the cables cause the drive is there it's just that it wont read anything at all.

That could still be a cable issue. Try putting a different IDE cable in, see if that solves the problem.

If not, your likely going to have to get a new one.

I am having problems too. I recently bought a new hard drive and reinstalled windows xp upgrade.
In order to install windows xp upgrade i had to start with windows upgrade disc in then placeing the windows 98disc in.
After that placeing the windows xp upgrade disc back in and then continuing with install.

After all that I updated my virus software and continued updating service pack 2 and all that jazz.

After everything was updated i began to install all my games. Everything was fine for a few weeks.

Then one day I opened, my computer folder and my 2 rom drives were not there. Dvd rom and CD-r were not in the folder. So I went to device manager and there they were both of them, with exclamation points next to them.

Huh, I said and unistalled them and rebooted. New hardware found upon reboot. When i try to update the drivers it says cannot install drivers. Under properties of the drives it says this:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

So thats where I am. On a side note, after I was finished installing service pack 2 i do have problems with internet explore. Like certain links wont open. For instance on fileplanet when I click to download a file once in the download section of a particualr file I want. The link that says to click for download a blank window opens and nothing happens. Same with other sites with a link for something. nvidia I cant download drivers from them with IE, and other sites with pop up windows that open from links.

Guess reinstall is my only option so far. Will wait till day before EQ2 launch to do so since I am in the beta. Thanks for your help before hand.

Your inet problem is easy to fix. There are 2 critical patches installed, and one is faulty. Goto your root drive\winnt directory and ensure you have hidden/systems files viewable. Look for folder $NtUninstallKB889669-IE6SP1-20041123.180658$. Double-click and go through the folders to uninstall that patch. Re-boot. Then look for folder $NtUninstallKB889293-IE6SP1-20041111.235619$. Double-click and go through the folders to uninstall that patch. Re-boot. Go to <A HREF="http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/c/6/7c646aee-ef76-4065-a584-8be0ca2de38b/IE6.0sp1-KB889669-Windows-2000-XP-x86-ENU.exe" target="_new">MS Download Center KB889669</A> to download the fixed patch. Run the patch and you should be good to go. It may look daunting, but all you are doing is uninstalling 2 patches and re-installing a roll-up patch.

Windows NT based platforms are notorious for 'dropping' off non critical devices when system resources run low. They will show up in device manager but are not accessible through explorer. Not sure what hardware you have, but check the event viewer log to see what's eating up your resources. On a cold boot, the system resources should be flushed. Use gpedit.msc goto Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\

Enable the policy: Clear virtual memory pagefile when system shuts down

How much ram do you have and what are your pagefile settings?
