Dear esteemed IF residents:

It is my pleasure to announce the unveiling of a new website,
http://www.ifwiki.org/.

The website should probably speak for itself, but I will point out a
few things here to give you a sneak peek.

The IFWiki is simply meant to contain indexes and lists of things that
may or may not exist in other places, but on ifwiki will be
interconnected (as only a wiki can).

Some information will come from other websites (such as Baf's), but all
links will point back to those "authorative" websites.

All general information on IFWiki should have a neutral voice.

You are allowed to post copyrighted material, but only if you own it
and are giving ifwiki rights to publish. This material can be removed
upon request.

You may create new content that is either public domain (recommended)
or licensed or copyrighted. If you retain rights, you are responsible
for the content, not ifwiki. You are inherently giving the public
rights to edit your material by publishing it on ifwiki.

David Welbourn, the master of html content and the creator of the HTML
version of the DM4, has taken it upon himself to do extraordinary
things with ifwiki to date. I think David's contributions to ifwiki
should be noted and applauded.

That's about it. Please take a look and....

You are encouraged to edit the ifwiki!

Nifty! I'm adding a bunch of stuff right now.

Good news! I love wikis! The part about giving the public rights is a
very important concept. That sounds scary, since it you won't have any
control over what someone does to your contribution. But, I think you
will find that -- out of mutual love for the subject -- members will
respect your freedom of expression and not make any lasting changes. I
also go to a wiki for the game go at http://senseis.xmp.net, and they
are all very respectful of each other.

That being said, I hope ifWiki will become something more than just a
bland list of IF-related links. There needs to be discussions and
theories, and it should be a place where people can talk out ideas and
keep a kind of blog. That's my $.02

Regarding ifWiki becoming a bland list of stuff:

It is also the intent of IFWiki to contain articles about craft and
theory. I have already started a few of these articles and licensed
them as public domain. You are encouraged to offer your insights.

When a conflict or a difference of opinion occurs, you will need to
branch thoughts with subsections. Craft should be more neutral, but may
have different versions of the same topic or example. Theory is more
subjective and we need to make sure that articles about theory (or any
other subjective material) is handled in a positive collaborative
manner.

Some of the content for the Adrift section might need an update. There's a
free version available - V3.9 - although the link on the Adrift site to it
has been inactive for months now (but is available from
http://www.shadowvault.net/adrift.htm). There should probably also be a
mention of jAsea (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jasea/) and Scare
(http://www.geocities.com/legion_if/scare.html) which allow people on
non-Windows computers to play Adrift games.

David,

I just wanted to say that I am very impressed with ifwiki. So much so that I
am thinking about purchasing "The Wiki Way" myself and having a read. Any
sites you could point me to or any thoughts you might have to better get me
into the wiki mind set I would appreciate.

Thank you,

-Nathan Slife

I've been reading IFWiki over the past couple of weeks. I'm happy to
say it covers a number of brief topics that I haven't seen discussed in
the articles I've read on critique and theory. In cases where it covers
ground I've seen before, it often includes links both to what I've read
so far and sometimes what I haven't.

It just goes to show that some things worth knowing about IF can't be
extended into pages and pages of material. My thanks to those who've
toiled over IFWiki so far.

Hmmm, so I did get the URL right. I had just added a few IF links to the
sidebar at my site, and I noticed that www.ifwiki.org was bringing up an
"unable to find the page" error. Nobody has mentioned that it's down, so
either you already know, or it's just a routing problem from where I am?

I have ifwiki.org running on what is more or less a test/development
Windows server. I plan to move it to a *nix environment and should be
much more stable at that point. Until then, I won't guarantee uptime,
but I will guarantee the data is safe.

It seems to be okay now....
