When I open any window other than an application window, the FILE option is
missing. Can anyone help me with how to restore this

Try this:

Open Regedit and go here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\
Remove "NoFileMenu" or change the value from 1 to 0

Many thanks Alan, this solved the initial problem However on rebooting my PC,
the NoFileMenu key returned along with other edits I had made to tidy up the
registry. I know I have other issues (I cannot install ActiveX components -
IE hangs up) and am trying to resolve them without doing a system restore.
Any help or advice on these others would be appreciated

Hi, John. Since you have "other issues", what have you done regarding
scanning for viruses and malware? If you have already scanned, tell us
with what (names and versions of programs, please).
