I'm helping my dad choose a laptop for my sister and found two pretty nice acers.

Here are my choices I found:

Acer Aspire AS6930-6235 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T6400(2.00GHz) 16" Wide XGA 4GB Memory DDR2 667 250GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi Intel GMA 4500MHD

for $550 on newegg

Acer Aspire AS5535-5452 Notebook PC - AMD Athlon X2 QL-64 2.1GHz, 3GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, DL DVDRW, 15.6" WXGA, ATI Radeon HD 3200

for $500 on tigerdirect

My sister wants a laptop that will last a while and has a webcam also possibly hooking it up to watch movies (maybe 720p .mkv hd files I can give her). She said she likes my dell screen a 15.4"

The first one is usually 150 more but doesnt have a good graphics card although it does have HDMI and VGA ports. It does have a better processor (2MB cache compared to 1MB) and the headphone jack is also spdif capable which is nice.

The second is a little more portable and has a dedicated graphics card. Processor not as good and 1gb less memory (running 32 bit vista) meanwhile the other is 64bit with 4gb.

Its kind've hard to say because their pros and cons are in a way opposites and with the great newegg deal the the price doesnt matter. Anyone know the differences on power consumption both processors are 34 watt?

Have in mind that processors can be upgraded in a laptop, graphics cards can't. If the purpose of the machine is multimedia, a dedicated graphics card is a nice complement (almost a must have).

I just got the Acer Aspire 5536 (a very similar model to the 5535) and video performance is awesome. I got the Linux version and even WITHOUT the ATI drivers (which provides full acceleration) it works very well while watching DVDs for example: just imagine what it would do with the drivers!

My laptop also has 2GB of RAM and 'despite of that' it runs very well. The only detail is that, with the Athlon X2 processor, battery life is at most 2 hours. If you are looking at a Turion X2 processor, though, battery life will be longer because it is more efficient in that department.

Happy purchase!
