Hey I just graduated from my Masters program and am going for my PhD. I'm looking to buy a laptop now to help me in this endeavor. I'll be traveling a good amount to and from school and the library.

I want a system that is proficient with Word and Excel, that has a good battery life, a large display (over 15 inches), has a good amount of ram and being light isn't a must, but a perk if you could.

What's your budget? For Word and Excel? Just about any brand new notebook/netbook you find out there will do Word and Excel fine. You don't need a good amount of ram for that. 1GB is sufficient for Windows XP.

A netbook will do what you want but they don't have a 15inch netbook I think. 10inch is the biggest they get. They have really good battery life and portability is excellent. Price is decent. Great for taking notes, and you can just connect it to an external lcd if you need a bigger screen.

Check this netbook out with 6-8 hours of battery life:

Just find any 15inch laptop that you like and it will suit your need.
