Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums,
For most purposes a dual core will perform better than a single core processor, each core can be thought of as a cpu. The speed of the processors determine the amount of difference. Often the work performed by the processor can be divided up between multiple cores. An example of that would be some of the Atom processors used in portable devices. Often one core is dedicated to graphics while the other does the actual computing (or variations thereof). On a single core unit all that work would have to be done by the one core which will be slower.
Probably over simplified, hope it helps

Dual core is better, with most software taking advantage of multiple cores now, it's basically like having two CPU's to process data. Which, in most cases makes it faster than a single core processor.
