If you've played a lot of IF, you realize most NPCs
(non-player-characters) are boring automatons who do nothing but
"react".
Several years ago, a U of Washington student posted an article. It's
on my website http://www.star-reign.com/creepymansion/ under
"Concept". Anyway, the article discussed creating NPCs that not only
interact, but participate in the puzzles and are (sometimes) able to
solve some.
I took the challenge and coded that fellow's example, and a few others.
The game I wrote (for Windows) is a very simple beta version with only
4 puzzles (takes less than 1 hour to play!). It's called Creepy
Mansion, and it's totally free. No, it's not coded in TADS or GLULX
(sorry Unix/Apple people). It was done in Visual Basic .NET. Anyway,
please try it out and let me know what you think. There's a few bugs,
but I'm working on it. Feedback is welcome. (To download see website
above).
