i dont know wat cord to get to make my mac book laptop work on a moniter

What mac book? What monitor?

If it's the regular macbook, you're going to need a displayport to whatever interface the monitor uses cable.
If it's a macbook pro and has a dvi port, you can use a dvi cable if the monitor supports it.
