Castle Belmar for the Commodore MAX (Ultimax/VC-10)
Thanks to the help of Peter Williams, I was able to
squeeze a small text adventure into the limited memory
of MAX BASIC (2,047 bytes free).
The program is 6 blocks long on a tape image (belmax.t64).
To load it via VICE, attach the tape image and make sure
that the maxbasic.crt cartridge image is also attached. It
should say "BASIC V2 2,047 bytes free" or (words to that
effect).
You can LOAD Castle Belmar via the following commands:
1. Type: LOAD"CASTLE BELMAR",1
2. The screen will say: PRESS PLAY ON TAPE
3. Go to Datasette Controls and select "Start".
4. The screen should blank and it should then say: FOUND CASTLE BELMAR
5. Wait patiently for a moment and then press and hold down the
left CONTROL key. The screen should then blank again as it finishes
loading the program.
6. You should then see a READY prompt. Type RUN to begin playing.
Type HELP at the game prompt to see what commands are used in
Castle Belmar.
Thanks go to Peter Williams (Pewtas) for helping me squeeze this
game into the limited memory of the Commodore MAX. This is the first
text adventure of it's kind believed to be available in only 2,047
bytes of RAM.
You can download Castle Belmar, including this text file, at the
following
website:
Scroll all the way down to "Castle Belmar" to download. Includes two
images: the disk image (for the Commodore 64), and the tape image
for the Commodore MAX.
As it is, the game BARELY fits into the memory of MAX BASIC. Sometimes
issuing into extremely long commands will crash the game with an
?OUT OF MEMORY ERROR. But that's only if you REALLY abuse the parser
and type something like: EXAMINE GFHFSHGFHJGFHGFFDHGFDHGFDHFGGFHGHGGF.
