Hey guys, right now I'm considering a Sager NP5797 purchase. Currently my plan is to get 3GB of RAM, since I want to use 32-bit Vista to maintain compatibility with older games and apps.

The question, do odd-numbered RAM setups bottleneck in dual-channel rigs? Sager lists the option as depending on one 2GB and one 1GB chip ("3GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 1 X 2GB + 1 X 1GB" ). Why didn't they opt for 3 x 1GB sticks for symmetry? Appreciate any help!

They didn't opt for the 3x1gb option because the Core2 memory controller doesn't work like that of i7 and will only allow for dual channel and not triple channel configurations.

As for performance, I'm not sure since I haven't messed with those configurations. You may loose a bit since you are loosing the dual channel link, but I'm not sure. And keep in mind that just because you have a 32-bit OS doesn't mean you can't have a 4gb configuration. You can have a 4gb config installed, but you just won't see all of it (you'll see something like 3.25 or 3.5 gb of the 4)

Sounds like a good thing for the TH team to test? In any case, I do think 2x2GB will perform better than a 2GB and 1GB configuration. Though we can only be sure though a controlled test, I guess.
