Viewsonic VG700b troubleshooting

I'm having a problem with this monitor (now out of warranty); when I turn it on, a normal desktop screen flashes briefly, and then the screen goes dark. While dark, I can just make outlines of the screen. I can shut it off, turn it back on, and again get the flash of a normal screen just before it turns dark. This has happened twice before, but then it went away after a few minutes. Today, the normal screen won't return. Any thoughts or anything I can do short of taking it in to get serviced?
