The hard drive won't boot... gets in a continuous loop trying to start up.

I have 2 hard drives installed... the original one, plus an upgraded 2nd drive. Is there any way to salvage the recorded programs? Can the drive be turned into an external hard drive for another Direct Tv Tivo DVR?? Can it be used on a pc?

I'm pretty computer savvy, so it SEEMS like it should work... but I know that Tivo puts in lots of proprietary data.
