The price ceiling is $300, before my friend gets a tube monitor instead. He's fine with 17" or even 15" but 19" would be nice. I just can't cut through the crap brands, all I can look at in person is what's on the Best Buy shelf, LG and Mag being the only brands with TFT monitors in that price range.

Thanks if you've got any suggestions!

I just bought the Samsung 710N 17" LCD monitor for $330 from with free shipping and no tax. I havent received it yet though.

Here are its features:
- 1280x1024@75Hz max.
- 600:1 Contrast Ratio
- 300 cd/m2 Brightness
- 12ms Response Time
- Analog Connector (for a DVI connector go for the 710T which is about $100 more)

I was going to get the screen from for $280+tax, but they have been receiving VERY bad ratings recently. I preferred a good seller than a cheaper price.

Thanks, but it doesn't help me much with the whole under-$300 thing. (roommate's kind of a cheapskate... maybe he should just get a cheapskate monitor and learn that way...)
