The price ceiling is $300, before my friend gets a tube monitor instead. He's fine with 17" or even 15" but 19" would be nice. I just can't cut through the crap brands, all I can look at in person is what's on the Best Buy shelf, LG and Mag being the only brands with TFT monitors in that price range.
I just bought the Samsung 710N 17" LCD monitor for $330 from Amazon.com with free shipping and no tax. I havent received it yet though.
Here are its features:
- 1280x1024@75Hz max.
- 600:1 Contrast Ratio
- 300 cd/m2 Brightness
- 12ms Response Time
- Analog Connector (for a DVI connector go for the 710T which is about $100 more)
I was going to get the screen from Buy.com for $280+tax, but they have been receiving VERY bad ratings recently. I preferred a good seller than a cheaper price.

Thanks, but it doesn't help me much with the whole under-$300 thing. (roommate's kind of a cheapskate... maybe he should just get a cheapskate monitor and learn that way...)
