just bought a new external hard disk and transferred my D: drive whihc was a logical partition of 24.4 GBs to it. The D: drive is now completely empty and yet WinXP says that the free space is only 21.9 GB

The logical drive was formatted to be 24.4 Gb and was so .. but now on emptying it, I get back only 21.9 GB

If I view the properties of the D: drive, it says the following:

Capacity: 24.4 GB
Free Space: 21.9 GB
Used Space: 2.47 GB

I can't understand why is says that 2.47 GB is being used when the drive should be empty.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Goto folder options and under view see if you have 'show hidden files and folders checked'. You might have some of those on the drive.
What was the origional size of the drive unfromatted?

Hi.. I solved the problem by formatting the partition. It nows shows that the free size is actually the original size of the partition.

Thanks for responding...
