Hi all hope u are fine ;)

I was just looking for a notebook in UK and found MSI GT725,it comes in 2 models, one with dual core and the other is quadcore,i was considering the dual core model which has this specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 2.53GHz 6MB Cache (1066MHz FSB)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 512MB
4GB DDR2 RAM
500GB 5400RPM HDD
Blu-Ray Driver
17" with 1680x1050(some sites claim they sell it with 1920x1200 resolution)

and it costs about £1000 which is a solid deal,so i went to search about the Mobility HD 4850,i didn't find alot of information about it but here is what i found so far:

1_It performs like a desktop HD 4830

2_I was looking here : http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benc...
and found that it performs pretty much like GTX 260M and in some games it even outperforms both GTX 260M/GTX 280M

What do u think?do u have any links that compares these cards ?

You seem to know what these cards compare to on dekstops, so I guess my suggestion would be to compare the desktop equivalents in the games you want to play. So in this case it would be a 4830 vs 8800GT ?

Also keep in mind that the HD 4800's actually use the same cores as the desktop cards and are just underclocked versions of them. If you go and OC your laptop card you could probably obtain performance that would be pretty close to the actual 4850.

Well HD 4830 beats a 8800GT in almost all games because it performs pretty much like a HD 4850,thats why some benchmarks report that a mobility HD 4850 beats a GTX 260M,and yes the good thing about mobility HD 4850 is that it has 800 stream processors and its only down-clocked.

So u think that a mobility HD 4850 beats a GTX 260M right ?

Not sure. Notebookcheck.net show the GTX260 winning in a lot of games like Crysis and COD4. Now I know Crysis is optimized for NVidia cards, but it's still something to consider.

Here's another set of benchmarks, not as complete as notebookcheck, but it may help:

I have checked both of the links before,in the second one if u look @ the comparison of SAGER NP5797 and MSI GT725 which isn't fair though because the SAGER model has a 200MHZ Faster CPU and an OC'd GTX 280M,u will see that 4850 isn't far behind and even in some games it edges a GTX 260M.

About the notebookcheck link,it shows that a HD 4850 is a solid performer especially in higher resolutions, the link is very populated so i made a comparison in notebookcheck between HD 4850/GTX 280M/GTX 260M,here take a look @ it :

Based on that I would take the 4850. Beats the GTX260 in just about everything.

thanks for the links :)  i really like how a HD 4850 performs :D  also i have heard that the P9500 can be OC'd to 2.9 easily which is also very good :)  i think its an unbeatable laptop @ the price range of 1000GPB

is this card offered in a 15" laptop?

This is proof Notebookcheck website is faulty.
You claim that according to this website, ATi HD4850 is faster than GTX 260m.
Well, if you also follow this website, the GTX9800m beats the Ati HD4850 in 2/4 tests (3dmark05, and 3dmark06). So does that make the GTX9800m equal to AtiHD4850? (even though we all know that GTX 260m is way better than GTX 9800m)

1) We aren't talking about 15'' laptops in this thread. Why even bring that up?

2) The two benchmarks you chose are synthetic benchmarks and they hardly ever translate into gaming performance. If you remember, the HD 2900XT was a beast in 3dMark06 but did terrible in games. Pick a better test to prove your point, ie actual games.

3) The GTX260M is better than the 9800GTX, but keep one thing in mind. The Laptop GTX260 and 280 are NOT based on the GT200 core like their desktop brothers. They are in fact just another rebadge job by NVidia. So yes it is better, but not by a whole lot.

GTX 260M isn't way better than a 9800MGTX,both cards has 112 SPs,so although GTX 260M wins the difference isn't much.

Notebookcheck may have "Some" mistakes because maybe they tested the cards with different systems,if u check out some other reviews that "lostandwandering" posted about HD 4850 u will see how it performs compared to a GTX 260M/GTX 280M
ATI mobility HD 4850 is like a desktop HD 4830 which is a solid performer and it performs pretty much like GTX 260M and even outperforms both GTX 260M/GTX 280M in some games.

1) the reason I brought 15" up is because username MAZIAR posted a comment on a 15" laptop thread, talking about HD4850 being better than GTX260m
2) MAZIAR used this website ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benc... ) to support his claims. So i used that same website to counter his claims, stating faulty testings done.
3)I am not arguing with you, I am simply stating that GTX260m is better than HD4850. The GTX260m is not a rebadged GTX9800m, its a whole different chip (55nm). Yes, its similar in specs, but not the same.

June 30, 2009 6:09:15 PM

Maziar, please tell me which games does the HD4850 outperform the GTX260m, because if it is true, I would go for HD4850, and also, site your sources. Thanks.

1_HD 4850 performs like a GTX 260M,its logical u know why ? because a Mobilty HD 4850 is like a desktop HD 4830 and a GTX 260M is like a desktop 8800GT and if u look @ their benchmarks u will see that they perform close to each other.

2_I talked about that in another thread, notebookcheck may have some wrong infos but not all of it is wrong,if u don't trust it simply check other sites.

Like this link:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=349540
As u see MSI GT725 with this config:
Intel P9500
ATI HD 4850
500GB 5400RPM HDD
Vista 32

Scores 10,567 in 3DMARK 06

And if u look @ here:
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread228495.html
Sager NP8662 with Intel P9700 @ 2.8GHz, 4GB DDR3 RAM + 500GB 7200 RPM HDD + VISTA 64 scores 10,507 in 3DMARK 06

Or here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=371000
SAGER NP8662 with a P9600 CPU @ 2.6 + 4GB DDR3 RAM + GTX 260M + XP Pro scores 10,493 in 3DMARK 06

So as u see the 3DMARK scores are pretty close even though the MSI model has a slower CPU/HDD than either of those SAGER models.

Also a GTX 280M is a like a desktop 8800GTX/9800GTX and it performs about roughly 5-10% better than a GTX 260M.
And yes a GTX 260M is a 55nm chip but it doesn't make it a whole better card than a 9800MGTX,because both have 112 Stream Processors.

3_I am not arguing either mate :)  we just want to talk here :)
June 30, 2009 6:40:21 PM

The Sager NP8662 was configured with a Vista 64bit, which runs everything 32bit slower, in testings or real games.
I have a friend running Sager NP8662, with Win XP 32bit, 4gb DDR3, and GTX 260m, and its 3dmark was 10,965.
So therefore the testings u stated are still unfair.

Also u never answered my question, is there a 15" laptop with HD4850, cuz I'm really interested in the card, its cheaper, and as u claim, "better".
June 30, 2009 6:42:59 PM

correction, the second test u mention is running XP pro, but still, it was lower than my friend's results, maybe due to lower CPU. My friend ran a T9900

lol ok if u dont want to accpet then even if i test 2 laptops side by side and compare them myself and tell u the MSI model scores more then u wont believe either.
I myself had VISTA 32 then moved to VISTA 64,there was no single performance loss, also both of those Sager laptops have 7200RPM HDDs and the MSI model has a 5400RPM,plus both of those sagers had ad faster CPU.
Also your friends rig has a XP 32 which performs better than either VISTA 32/64 in 3DMARK 06 and he has a T9900 which runs @ 3.0GHZ and with all of these it scored only few more than the MSI model which has a 2.5GHZ CPU + a 5400RPM HDD,so my testings weren't wrong.
If u don't believe them simply do a google search and u will see the results yourself.

Also if u check the other thread i answered u there, there isn't any 15" laptops with HD 4850 currently.
