Dell Dimension 8100
512 Mb RAM
Hdd: 40Gb(C:) & 120Gb
Windows XP Home Ed.(upgd from WinMe) w/SP2
Norton Anti-Virus

The system hung while running scan with NA. Had to use "End Task" and
reboot. Windows would not start. Tried Safe Mode, it went into a reboot
cycle.

Tried running chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, and reboot. Received the
following message:
"Windows could not start. Load needed dlls Kernel.exe. Contact support..."

Next tried to reinstall Windows XP Home, it can no longer see the windows
installation directory for some reason after running Chkdsk.

Urgently Need Help!

I'd say your hard drive is dying.

If it's under warranty, call Dell, if not, try a new hard drive.

I figured the drive might be failing. I tried to use recovery console "set
allowallpaths", so I could maybe copy data from c: to d:. The "set" command
seems to require security rights found in Windows directory. Before
"chkdsk", recovery console prompt was "C:\Windows" after "C:\". I can't
figure out what happened.

Any suggestions on saving data on C:?

1. Get rid of Norton.
2. Are you using a third party boot editor?

1. I'm definitely getting rid of Norton. Someone suggested AVG, what are
your thoughts?
2. No, I'm not using any third party boot editors.

TIA,

Install the drive in another XP computer. If the drive and data can be
seen, then copy the important data. Next time make sure you have a
complete backup at all times.

The truth is one, you must accept it. Reality is not a point of view, since
if everything was a point a view, then the theory that everything is a point

Yes! I suggest you use AVAST home edition that is also free.
It is FAR better than AVG (personal opinion).
www.avast.com

direct link to HOME edition (free) is here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

I agree with your decision about Norton... they have to fix their products
up...

Please let me know about what you think about avast after you install at

kenny.open[remove]@gmail.com

or post here if you have any other questions.
