Are you all aflutter with anticipation for the upcoming Comp? Calm
those nerves by settling down to write a review!

But seriously, folks...

As Greg Boettcher mentioned in his recent post, a new issue of SPAG is
due very, very soon. Unfortunately, I have very little -- other than my
own drivel -- to put in it. You've all heard this drill before, so I
won't belabour the point. Suffice to say that SPAG is a community
resource that depends on the community's participation for its existence.

I know there is a veritable army of lurkers out there who enjoy playing
the occasional game but perhaps don't have the time to get more actively
involved in the community. (I know this because I used to be one of
them, and have corresponded with several others.) For you, a review or
two for SPAG is a relatively painless way to give something back, and
maybe even influence the development of IF in some small way. Please
give it some thought.

The official submission deadline is still September 25. However, if you
seriously intend to write a review(s) but need a little more time, drop
me a line to let me know. I can most likely grant you a few more days.

I am happy to publish reviews of virtually any IF game, new or old. In
a slight shift of editorial focus that may or may not go anywhere, this
includes even freeware or commercial graphical games that tell
worthwhile interactive stories that might interest our community here.
SPAG's focus will remain the games produced by this community, however.
With that in mind, here are some games I would absolutely love to
publish reviews of:

1. All Hope Abandon
2. Dawn Of The Demon
3. 1893: A World's Fair Mystery
4. Finding Martin
5. Future Boy!
6. Mystery House Taken Over games (any, some, or all!)
7. Narcolepsy
8. Return To Ditch Day
9. Threnody
10. Whom The Telling Changed
11. IntroComp 2005 games (any, some, or all!)
12. Building
13. Dracula: The First Night (remake version)

Thanks, folks. SPAG is counting on you!

Is it still a requirement of SPAG that a reviewer has to have finished
the games he reviews?

Yes, I'm afraid so. The only exception would apply to those more
avant-garde efforts that perhaps don't have a traditional "ending" per se.

I realize this requirement can be very daunting for something like, say,
1893 and will probably cost me a fair number of submissions, but I just
don't feel like I can publish a review if the reviewer has not
experienced the game in its entirety. What if the best bits come at the
end? Or, conversely and unfortunately probably more commonly, what if
an otherwise polished and professional effort starts feeling rushed and
hasty toward the end?

What is the deadline in October? How long is a review supposed to be?

I'm afraid September 29 is about the best I can do. I want to get this
issue out I and everyone else get immersed in the Comp.

Longer than a few sentences and shorter than a novella. :) Seriously,
there are no hard and fast requirements on length. You might want to
browse through some of the back issues on the SPAG web site (see my sig)
to get an idea of how other people approach reviews.
