I'd suggest you google "reviews of digital camcorders" there are some very good review sites. I have an older Sony, I think it's PV120 or something like that, which has been terrific. I wouldn't be that concerned with how well they take stills given that's not what the camera is for and none are as good as a digital camera

I'd say go with sony. I have had the dcr-trv-22 for 4 years and just now after it got dropped for the fifth time the lens takes about 10 minutes to work after you turn it on. Great camera, love the sony touch screens. quality is still good although it takes time to work. Gotta get that fixed
