I'm getting down to the final decisions. The primary performance usage of the system will be for games. Other type of use will be fine (Word, VB, etc) considering I'm doing them now on a 1.4 Celeron.

Do I really need 1G of memory? Will 512 do for now?

I'm thinking on Balistic 4000 or 3200, one stick of 512.

MSI Neo2 Ultra board, 3200 or 3500 AMD64 Winchester. MSI 6800 GT vga.

No, it won't. Some games take forever to load with just 512mb. DooM3 is one of them. Everything will run better with 2 X 512mb.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

Ned missed the "now on" part of that sentence. The A64 will be fine.

Yes, games will RUN on 512Meg (even Doom/HL). Just like WinXP will RUN on a system with 128Meg of RAM... (i.e., get another 512meg)

1GB will def give you a performance increase, but im only using 512meg and my performance is fine in most games. Doom3 runs fine as long as I keep the texture detail on medium.
I think 1GB will become the norm fairly soon though so its not a bad idea to get 2x512. But if money is an issue get 512meg now and then another 512 a few months down the line.

I would say get 1gb and also, try and get the best ram u can according the specs of your comp etc etc.

On a side not, does anyone think it would make much difference to my system to get another 1gb of Kingston Hyper X Pc3200 low latency.

P4C800E, 2.8P4E, 1gb HyperX LL PC3200, PX712A, Liteon CDRW/DVD Combo Drive, Ati Radeon 9800Pro 256, Audigy 2ZS Platinum, Antec True 550,Lian LI PC70, 74Gb WD Raptor, 200Gb Maxtor ATA133 (running xp pro and a few games not heavy gamer tho)

Will 2Gb make much difference if say im burning a cd/dvd backup and doing other things at the same time?

damn that's a nice setup you got there... that's my end goal as money trickles in. are you running that 1GB as 2 stick or dual channel? you would do better in dual channel with the smae amount. i haven't heard of too many people going with 2GB, though i know it hapens alot. i don't think there is any immediate need for 2GB yet. but wait for the next generation of shooters to come out... Far Cry 2, HL3, Doom4... but for now i think 1GB in dual channel is enough... even if XP Pro does eat 128MB of it...

2x256MB PC3200 2-2-2-5 - WD 74GB Raptor

Using a cd/dvd drive is cpu intensive while doing other stuff is gunna hit it more as well so another gig aint gunna make much difference
