I know that this is a n00b question, but i will try to come off more like a newb and not a n00b.

I have a microphone and it dosnt work when i plug it into the appropriate plug. its got a 3.5mm jack and i put it directly into the motherboard (i dont have a seperate sound card). when i plug it in, nothing happens. i try to use it, but skype/rosetta stone/ games dont work. please help, this is a problem that has been bothering me for years.
