i went to best buy today and bought an ipod nano 4gb. i got an open box ipod never used scratched free and 2 years warranty for free. but the salesman told me if you want the battery life to be longer it's better to use an ipod battery charger than using the computer. Is this true or is this just a myth right now?

Could be a sale pitch.

While the USB port can charge the iPod, it will be a slow trickle charge and should not in anyway damage the battery.

Batteries usually die faster when they are charged too quickly by a charger pumping more amps than specified.
